How to keep inside plants happy, any ideas?

So a little problem I have been dealing with for the past couple of years with my inside plants are gnats. I finally think I am rid of them and they pop back up in greater numbers. Any "green" ideas on how to solve this. I have been eanting to have an indoor garden, but I can't find myself to pull the trigger until I have a solution to these pests.
Ideas?
