I have moved 52 times in my life. Here is the secret.

"Handle things only once."

When you pick something up, decide if it is worth moving...if so, pack it...if not pitch it. Have the wisdom to throw useless stuff away.

When you unpack on the far end, open things and put them away as you take them out.

This means you have to set up critical pieces of furniture first. Save all your hardware for the beds, dressers, and other furniture you will have to reassemble in plastic bags and put them in your portable tool box when you move it, so you know where it is.

Have your kitchen and bathrooms clean with shelf paper (if you use it) in place before you start to unpack so you can put stuff away as you unpack it.

If you open a bunch of boxes, set the stuff to the side, and have to keep moving the stuff from place to place before you put it away, it wastes a lot of energy.

Do not let every room become a disaster. You will need to get a couple of rooms livable early to have a place to go that is comfortable. Plan to get your car in the garage by the end of the second week. If you have stuff stacked up out in the garage that keeps you from putting your car away...you have too much junk.

Handle things only once. Learned the hard way over a lifetime of moves.
