Hope Hicks resigns

Says she accomplished what she wanted (after 6 months of having the Comm director job) and is moving on to other things.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2018...-director.html

I know Comm Directors rarely make it through an entire administration (Carter's the only President to have only one....Bush Sr. had two) but Trump's on pace to shatter Reagan's record of seven.

Water, Mylar packed: Why so expensive?

Found a survival bag at a yard sale and decided that would spend $10 max for it.

I knew that the bag was worth that empty, so was worth it.

It contained a 6 of the 125 ml packs of water (little over 4oz). When I looked up the prices on line, 6 of these little things is $15 US.

You can get a 24 case of water bottles for $2.

Why are the Mylar packed ones so crazy expensive?

What are the pros and cons of water packaged in this way?

****?s Sporting Goods Calls For Gun Control

****'s Sporting Goods has pulled ARs from their Field & Stream stores, while at the same time calling upon congress to enact common sense gun control. They have also enacted several gun control measures in their stores.

That's right, ****'s Sporting Goods has asked congress to pass gun control laws.

After the Sandy Hook shooting, ****s Sporting Goods said they would no longer sell the AR-15. The rifles were pulled from their main stores, but ARs were still sold from their Field & Stream outlets.

3 Muslim women awarded $180k in lawsuit when forced to remove hijab for police mugsho

Odd considering if you get arrested they can make you change your clothes. Did wearing an orange jumpsuit offend them too. I'm certain you can be forced to do all sorts of things you don't want to do if you're in jail. Like sleep in a room with people you don't know, be given bland food, have open toilet facilities and showers, get up and go to bed when someone tells you, etc.

I think taking my hat off for a photo would be the least of my worries.

Two points:

A) The mods tend to get twitchy when you circumvent the word filter. Even for a good cause. Even if the filtering is silly.

B) Might be as much a business move as political. The market got oversold under Obama because there was so much hysteria about a gun ban. Now, with Trump in office, there's less demand and a saturated market. And an actual gun ban that might leave them with stock that would be hard to move, is actually looking possible.

I'd like to buy a 308 AR factory built rifle for night hunting/varmint hunting. Which brand and why?
As far as features on the gun I just want a flat top receiver and no front sight so I can mount a scope.
I know some of you will say just build a 308 platform but I would rather not have a franken gun.

Thinking about January's false alarm nuke attack in Hawaii . Is there a proper government source to go to if it happens again to confirm or receive details? I tried surfing FEMA's website, but its not terribly organized or intuitive. If we have an event where do I get details on locations, confirmation, etc?

Just one more...

I recently wrote this in memory of our son. Its intended to remind us that we are never guaranteed the next breath.

Just One More

By Glenn Williams

Just one more story Momma, pleaded the little boy
And then I’ll go to sleep.
Go to bed now Son
The story will have to keep

Just one more drink Momma, pleaded the boy
And then I’ll go to sleep.
Go to bed now Son
Don’t make a peep

Just one more game Momma, pleaded the boy
And then I’ll go to bed
Go to bed now son
Playtime is over I said

Just one more hour Momma, pleaded the boy
And then I’ll come home
Come home now son
Its too late to roam

Just one more goodbye pleaded the momma
A goodbye to my heart
My soul is shattered
Pain off the chart

Just one more kiss pleaded the momma
A last kiss from my son
He’s gone too soon
No joy under the sun

Just one more hug begged the momma
A good hug from my child
He’s gone too soon,
No more running wild

Just one more breath cried the momma
Just one more breath for my lad
He’s gone too soon
Life is so sad

Just one more second cried the momma
Let this one second pass
I’ll take the next breath
I have no choice, alas.

Give me peace, she cried unto God
My heart is broken
My life without joy
My spirit is broken

Give me comfort Lord, she begged
You know my sorrow
You see all my pain
I feel there’s no tomorrow

Peace, my child, said God
Know that I am here
Come into my arms
I’ll wipe your tear

My angels surround you, said God
They protect you at night
No one will harm you
No one will give you fright

My children will help you, said God
To get through the day
They know of your loss
They know the way

Fear not, said God
I took your son home
He is no longer in pain
Your son is not alone

Rejoice in me, said God
You shall be together again
You will weep tears of joy
At your journey end

What plans do you have for transportation if cars do not run or no gasoline is available?

My issue right now is bad knees. Difficult to ride a bicycle or walk long distances.

A bike with bike trailer sounds doable if knees were better.

Best place to hide emergency cash

I normally carry a fanny pack with my walking around money in it. I ride public transit so higher risk of being robbed.

I have extra money I have put aside for personal SHTF events like my husband getting on a violent drunk and me having to leave the house. I don't want to carry that in my fanny pack in case I get robbed, but I would like it close at hand.

I plan to get a Pelican case for important papers, but I don't think I would need them if it was "just" a drunk.

We each have our own different SHTF events, and some in common. Unfortunately really bad behavior from my husband is one of mine. Sometimes I need to leave him for a period of time until he gets smart.

Any offhand ideas where I could put the extra money? I want it hidden, in case the house gets robbed. It would need to be pretty close at hand. Normally he has the blackouts late at night so that's a factor.

He hasn't had a problem in years (2011) but I am just planning for eventualities.

Let's talk about dog breeds

So far, from my experience, the Cur dog is maybe the most flexible for what I am doing.

They make good:

  • Hunting dogs, including hunting wild pigs.
  • Independent
  • Agile
  • Alert
  • Fast
  • Family friendly

I live in a rural area and my cur dogs, one grown and one puppy, have plenty of room to roam. When my dogs and I go on a dayhike, the Cur dog is right at home. When the heavier dogs get winded, the Cur is still going strong.

I also have a:

  • German Sheppard, Rottweiler mixed mutt.
  • Lab mixed mutt,
  • Hound mix. The hound looks like a Redbone hound dog. The hound dog bets winded easier than the cur dog, and has to take more breaks.

The Cur dog rarely stops for water, when at the same time the other dogs are laying in the creek to cool off.

Would the hound mix and cur dog do well for everyone? Of course not. When the hound starts baying, he would probably wake a whole neighborhood.

German Sheppard, Lab, Golden Retriever and Irish Setter are also at the top of my list.

Prepping in a College Dorm

Greetings all.

In a few months I'm going to be starting college out of state at a school that requires all freshmen to live on campus. Obviously, a College dorm is not an ideal prepping/storage arrangement, but it is what it is. What this means is that my vehicle is essentially going to become my bug out bag. My biggest concern with this arrangement is temperature. The school is in Montana, which means wide temperature variations through most of the year. I'm worried about condensation running my dry food stores (I plan to have ~50lbs each of corn, beans and rice, plus a few other extra calories). I know there are moisture absorption packets and such, but those only work so well, and I'm worried that nine months of winter will be too much.

Any experience/wisdom to share here? I imagine the best idea would be to try and join a group that has a place to stash my gear, but honestly at this point I don't offer many skills that could make me terribly valuable to a group. And should I be unable to find a group, I want to have a plan B to store my stuff. Ie, my truck.

I'm open to suggestions at this point.

What options for A/C for a room in my shop?

DefaultWhat options for A/C for a room in my shop?

I have what's basically a giant detached garage that I use as a shop at my house. The previous owner framed and plumbed a small room in a back corner as a bathroom but never finished it. It's about 10x10ft. I would like to use it as food storage but in south Alabama it gets way too hot in the spring and summer. The studs are exposed so insulating won't be a problem, but I was wondering if there's a feasible way to air condition it. If so, I think it can hold the amount of food I'd like to store. If not, I have other uses for the room but no good place for a larder.

New illegal alien voters in chicago...

Well, the 101 counties outside of Cook County are no longer relevant. The Chicago Democrats now have gained several hundred thousand (non citizen) Illegal Alien voters. Republicans, Independents, and Conservatives no longer have representation in Illinois. The Democrat death spiral of Illinois (and America) is accelerating.

Liberalism is a cancer. The patient (America) has to be in at least stage 3... Illinois (like several states) is lost already, but it's a scary precedent to set.

Living in the woods, is it doable?

Hello, everyone. I lost my old account so I'm an old user but just starting fresh. I always like this board as you all are quite interesting people to chat with.

I've been tinkering with this idea I've had. I'm debating the idea of living in a Van. So it would sort of be a combination of Van life, slash... having an offgrid camp / shelter home. I'm fortunate to be living in Canada so there's lots of areas for that sort of thing.

I guess it's the type of concept that unless you just do it, you'll never really know what it's like. But I wanted to run the concept by you all for feedback.

The idea would sort of look like living in the Van / shelter for part of the year. Then in the coldest winter months my thought was I'd probably head to warmer temperatures for a while. That or just rent a room somewhere for a few months until the snow melts.

I'm just debating this. I know this is way outside the box of what I'm use to. I'm not even 100% sure if I'd do it, but right now based on everything going on it's actually 1 option that's on the table. I see a lot of videos of people on youtube living in Vans so I tend to think it's at least possible. What are your thoughts on this idea? Is this just too impractical? I know I could at least try it and see if it's even remotely for me or not. So that might be one option.

I'm just trying to gather some more information on the pro's and con's of such a move? Let me know your thoughts.

Prager University Sues Google

Conservative Nonprofit PragerU Is Suing Google for Alleged Discrimination
Prager University, a conservative nonprofit that creates educational videos, is suing Google for allegedly discriminating against the digital media organization for its fairly moderate ideological slant.

Specifically, PragerU is accusing YouTube, which is owned by Google parent company Alphabet, of restricting or “demonetizing” videos even though they all appear to be innocuous and compliant with the platform’s rules.
PragerU’s videos include former and current professors and scholars from Stanford, Harvard, and Yale, like Alan Dershowitz; prominent athletes like Cobi Jones; popular celebrities like Mike Rowe; and influential figures like Steve Forbes. The majority of the people featured—sans political commentator Dinesh D’Souza—are not usually considered exceptionally controversial. Neither are a lot of the topics, some of which are likely studied in classrooms across the country.

Topics include “Is the Death Penalty Moral” and “The Progressive Income Tax.”

“If you’ve seen any of our videos, they’re very educational, and are very appropriate for ‘young viewers,’” said Craig Strazzeri, chief marketing officer for PragerU, addressing accusations from Google.

Google's been quietly demonetizing conservative channels & putting them on "Restricted Mode" for some time. Seems to be accelerating, that even a fairly moderate conservative such as Dennis Prager and his brainchild (PragerU) can be so affected.

Here's a pretty good article at the Daily Caller on this very subject:
Conservative And Independent YouTube Channels Hit By Censorship And Demonetization

[Yes, I know that Google is a private company, and can do whatever the hell they want with their websites and their property.... Not challenging that they can do it. Just putting this out there as information for discussion, in case anyone has any delusions that Google is "just an search engine" or "just an information company". -- clocker]

Everyone know that the Left hates our 2nd Amendment. And, they supposedly loves the 1st Amendment (evidence, the ACLU)... That is, when it suits and serves them. When conservatives exerce their 1st Amendment rights, they're labelled haters, bigots, homophobes, Islamophobes, sexists, and everything under the sun. Now, there appears to be evidence that the Left is silencing conservative voices altogether (or putting them at a distinct disadvantage and de-incentivizing them) on Youtube and other forms of social media.

Best of luck to PragerU. And to any others similarly mistreated.

First, they came for the Bumpstocks. Since a Bumpstock is just a stupid gimmick, I didn’t fight for them.

Then, they came for the high capacity magazines. Since no one needs 30 rounds to hunt with, I didn’t fight for them.

Then, they came for the semi-automatic assault rifles. Since those are made only to kill people, I didn’t fight for them.

Then, they came for the high powered, scoped sniper rifles. Since you only need a shotgun to hunt and shoot sporting clays, I didn’t fight fight for them.

Then, they came for all the other guns. Since they were now illegal and I’m a law abiding citizen, I didn’t fight for them.

Then, they came for my children! Since I didn’t care about Bumpstocks, I had nothing left to fight with.

We have a 540 ft. well; the static water line is 300 ft.

Without electricity to run the pump or a generator (which we have but knowing that fuel may not always be available) how can we get the water out of the well?

There doesn't appear to by any hand type pumps that can lift that distance.

Does anyone have ideas or experience with this depth?

Long time prepper- silent but venting

I have been a prepper for most of my life. I grew up on a small ranch and my parents always prepared expecting the next depression to happen. As a child, a SHTF situation could have happened and my life would have virtually not changed. My parents are now both deceased and having no brothers and sisters, my family is literally myself, my wife and one daughter. I am an upper management professional working in an office. Other than my assistant of 12 years, no one knows I am a prepper. Some know I collect a few weapons based on various office conversations throughout the years but that is it. My assistant knows a little due to seeing an occasional package delivered as well as I have brought my portable stove to boil water in my office and have had her sample various meals with me when deciding on brands of dehydrated foods (mountain house, Wise etc.) But she also knows I am an avid camper so that is my way to explain away my food taste testing. I tend to prep foods my family has already taste tested and liked. In a SHTF situation, although when hungry we would all eat about anything regardless of taste, I wanted to at least provide my family the comfort of having foods available they will enjoy eating to give us a bit more comfort in what would obviously be a stressful situation.

We have a very small group of like minded friends who know what we do. In all reality we live a very double life as a prepper. In my professional life, I see people every day that have the financial resources to buy anything they need but these same people panic every year when a hurricane comes near and they wait to the last minute to go to the store to buy a little water and various food and as soon as the storm passes so does the thought of preparing. At the end of each hurricane season, I watch the sites like (offerup and letgo) because people then sell their dehydrated food and other supplies for 10% of what they paid for it. Each year after hurricane season is over, I would imagine I pick up enough food to last my family a few months for less than I would normally pay for a week's worth of this type of food. Each time I meet some stranger selling the (obviously sealed and untouched food) I hear the same similar story of how they bought it and did not need it and just wanted to get a little money back. I have even bought food or supplies from the same person doing the same thing each year ( buying in panic then selling for almost nothing). I seriously do not understand this mentality of panic buying just to sell and then do the same thing again the next time a storm comes near. I have actually had co-workers laugh about how I am calm while they are running to the store to buy up the last bit of water on the shelf. I play it off as taking my chances and will just drink out of my faucet or some other sarcastic remark to make them think I am even more naive about preparing then they are. I have even had people insist that I take a case of water from their panic purchases just so I have something. Which I gladly accept and just remain silent as I hear how small jokes about how I should be more prepared for the storm. These same people who if a major storm really hit, would be out of their supplies in a week or two at best.

I have even looked into a few local prepper groups. I have met a few nice people with great knowledge but also meet some fairly clueless people as well. I had a guy actually brag about how he is really overly stockpiled on ammo and then try to impress me by saying he has almost 600 rounds of ammo for his two 9mm handguns and 100 rounds of ammo for his 12GA. I simply just said "Wow that is a lot of ammo" while thinking 600 rounds is a day at the range at best....LOL I met a lady that openly talked about her food storage and although I admit she did have an impressive amount, she also admitted to not owning a single gun. So here is this older single woman basically telling a group of unknown people that she has a lot of food and it can be taken without resistance.

Although I have been a prepper my total life, I consider myself a novice. I am not Rambo or the guy who can go into the mountains for a year with nothing but a knife and fishing string and expect to ever walk out of there.
I find it amazing how being a prepper has such a negative stereotype associated with the word. It is as if we have an addiction that we have to hide that addiction from the rest of the world. If people in my social professional environment knew the extend of my prepping, I would be labeled as a loony and networking professionally would be non-existent. These same people who want to mock people like me would be the first ones demanding that I share what I have saved with them in the event of a real SHTF event. Somehow they would think I owe it to them and if not given they would try and take it. So I find myself hiding in plain sight. My wife and I have to live more secluded. I have reached the point in my prepping that I really have enough to feel comfortable and pass more time looking at ways to blend in and hide what I have from any guests or maintenance or cleaning people who might come into the house. Being know as the guy in the office least prepared for a storm.

I suppose as a prepper I am different. I see the sheep walking around unprepared or at best could live a few weeks off of what they have in their pantries. My wife and I might go to the supermarket or Walmart the day before a storm hits not to buy anything but just to see what was cleaned off the shelf. I find it very curious to see what people buy in a panic before a storm. I think we can learn much from watching the panic buying to perhaps think of something I missed in my preps. But then you see the clueless people. This past hurricane season I went to the supermarket to see a woman with a smirk look on her face with a cart full of frozen pizzas. She must have had 40 pizzas in her cart. She was ready for the big storm and had plans to eat pizza while the rest of the clueless were fighting over the last of the water bottles. Just hope she has a gas oven and a generator and enough fuel to keep the freezer running..LOL.

If had to worry about the power going out for days or months and that meaning my family would not have food or water or medical supplies, lights, a way to cook, keep warm or cold or dry, a way to protect everything, an alternate location also stocked. So perhaps I am odd or different because I could not sleep if I had to worry about those types of things. If SHTF basically everyone that I know would not make it. Perhaps I would be surprised and there more people in my area or neighborhood being silent or acting naive the same as me. I hope that is the case but I doubt it.

During a recent hurricane that was projected to hit directly where I live, my daughter who was born into this and has been taught as much as I can in her limited years, could not understand why I put several AR's in various places throughout the house the night before the storm hit as well as put one in each vehicle not knowing which car we might have to escape in. My wife was out of the country on business and when she left the storm was not supposed to be close to us so it was just me and my daughter alone to ride out the storm. She did not really take it seriously as I had hoped. She seemed more worried about the internet working. After the storm, there was no power for a week. And I considered us very lucky having no damage and only a loss of power. I took my daughter out with me to an area of the city we normally do not go. Already the next day there were close to 100 people lined up at the only restaurant that must have been cooking off gas since there was no sound of a generator anywhere. I parked about 100 yards from the restaurant and let my daughter watch these people pushing and shoving, a few small fights, a group of about 20 hanging outside a closed gas station looking to be debating on looting. And this was day 1 after the storm. I wanted her to see how these people who do not prepare are already acting as animals less than 24 hours of not having power. She watch with eyes wide open. So I hope this helped her to see how bad things could get. And this was a minor storm compared to what it could have been. I told her imagine if a real SHTF situation happened and the power might not be on for weeks, months or never. I was actually very grateful for the storm because it was a good test run. As prepared as I felt I was for the long term, I had overlooked having some comfort fun things to do to pass time the week without power. Wished I had had more board games or some movies download to make a short term situation more enjoyable.

Anyhow...thanks to those who read my ranting. Sometimes you just need to vent a little when living a double life as a prepper.

DefaultSRO's in the schools again

The schools in my suburb have had them since I moved here. As a kid in HS we had a cop in the high school, but that was in a small violent town with five paper mills and a neighboring town with a huge bulk steel plant. Personally, I think it's a great idea. A better idea is an additional couple employees carrying and regularly training togethor. As is, all these shooter games are first person tactical shooting simulators. I'm not surprised by all this school incidents.

YouTube - what's going on?

A lot of us who watch YT gun related videos have been seeing, over the last 6 months or so, many of the popular channels being assessed strikes which then leads to channel closings/bannings. It's been happening with great frequency lately yet still accelerating to include many small channels.

Add to this in just the last few days a lot of right leaning "alternative news" sites have been having the same thing happening to them in the same manner. In fact, so many channels are being such down that it's got a lot of people very upset.

I obviously have no idea whatsoever is going on but I wanted to note it's occurrence and ask if anyone here has any thoughts on it?

A New, and Unfortunate Era of World History has Arrived.

DefaultA New, and Unfortunate Era of World History has Arrived.

Putin has assumed power indefinitely, overtly killing and jailing his opponents at every turn to keep his position. The voting process in Russia is now openly corrupted, compromised and finished. China's President, Xi Jing Ping has done the same this week through a bill that erases term lengths, seizing power indefinitely as China's new Maoist God Emperor in a turn of not so surprising policy change. We see the same with Merkel in Germany as she approaches 16 years of rule. "Multi-culti", now the rule of the land. Here, we are seeing in the home land the beginning of the final stage of forceful gun confiscation in America, by a government that has been steadily empowering itself, for the last 80 years, with far reaching powers and authority, the likes of which we have never seen in all of our history; nor ever should have had to expect. What I am getting at is that policy change here is really on keeping up with the "Dictatorial Jones's", the tyrannical neighbors of the world. This is the era of the super state, the beginning of 'new orders" and technological, modern feudal states. What was once prescribed as fiction and conspiracy has quickly become reality. The seeds of unending autocracy, global tyranny have been lying in wait but have now sprouted and are quickly growing their decaying and wretched roots deep into the soil. When meeting such an impasse in time, what are we to do? History will depend on what we do and don't do now. Make no mistake, you are not crazy, you are not hallucinating. This is indeed the beginning of the end of the sovereign individual.

Owning Ballistic Body Armour in NZ

Hi, as per the title, does anyone from NZ know if it is legal to own Ballistic body armour, (Including helmets), in NZ?

I'm looking to move back to NZ, from the UK, and would like to bring my stuff back with me. I have a couple of sets of body armour with plates, plus a couple of Gentex style helmets. All are Level IIIA. They would be coming over in a shipping container with the rest of my possessions but I wouldn't want to surprise customs with anything that may be illegal.

I have done a small amount of research so far and came across the Arms Amendment Bill (No 3) but it's from 2005, part of it states,

'There are some new offences relating to the possession for illegal purposes of body armour designed for protection against firearm projectiles. There are increases to some of the maximum penalties under the Arms Act, and a new order of the court is established, applicable to many of the offences in the Arms Act, which is the suspension of a firearms licence, a dealer’s licence, or an endorsement on a firearms licence'.
https://www.parliament.nz/en/pb/hans...-first-reading

Do you think that means they're not saying you can't have it but if you wear it during some sort of criminal activity then you're liable for even more punishment than if you had none on at all??

I'd never really thought about any implications with bringing that stuff back to NZ but after emailing NZ Firearms about bringing a deactivated weapon to NZ, and being told it's a no go unless you have a NZ firearms certificate with an importers endorsement (You don't need anything in the UK to own a deactivated weapon), I got thinking about the body armour and helmets I wanted to bring back and started to worry that I won't be able to.

I could always email the same place I asked about the deactivated weapon I guess, but thought I'd ask here first.

Cheers in advance for any information

Question about remington 870 police

Okay,

I'm bidding on a Remington 870 police magnum on gunbroker. It has the 18.5" barrel on it. The barrel has a dovetail ramp on the front and has an xs tritium front. The rear has a traclok rear. My question is two fold.

1. Does any companies make screw hole plugs for when I remove the rear track lok?

2. Does anyone know if this lpa rear will work with the ramped front sight mentioned above?

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/47...uns-steel-blue

3. If the ramped front sight won't work I'm going to go with a bead front barrel. Hopefully one without a pedestal so I can have a front sight silver soldered on. I'm assuming with this one you'd have to remove the pedestal.

https://www.amazon.com/LPA-Front-Sho.../dp/B01LT8DHRY

I prefer all my rear ghost rings to have the protective ears.

Hatcher

This is probably going to be a collection of short stories for when I don't want to work on the Flip Side, my main focus here on the forum.

Mobs were sadly not an unusual sight in Bois D’Arc Run. It was an old hideaway for smugglers, river pirates, highway men, and murderers. This mob however, was after an unusual person even for Bois D’Arc Run. They were after Gerald “The Knife” Hatchers boy, who was only twelve.

Shotguns, squirrel rifles, and torches were clutched by the drunk mob. Charlie Hatcher watched them come, body tense with apprehension. He’d known his father was a bad man, and his father had never tried to hide it. Gerald was a decent father, rarely drunk, hardly beat the boy, and had always kept the house, or rather shack, in decent shape.

However, Gerald was nothing if not a realist, and knowing that one day he might well get killed, he had long instilled in Charlie a sense of self reliance. Charlie had been in charge of food gathering since he was old enough to kill snakes with a walking stick. He could trap game, and set trot lines with the best of the old-timers.

Gerald wasn’t much of a shot, but he taught Charlie how to shoot, load, and clean the old double barreled shotgun as best he could. He also taught him how to write and read, roughly that is.

Now, as Charlie watched the torches come through the undergrowth along the path, he heard his fathers words.

“Boy, ain’t nothin’ in here worth dyin’ over, ‘cept you I reckon. I’m gonna level with ya though, day may come when I don’ be comin’ home no mo’. Iffin dey’s comes a posse or a mob, you jus’ be moobin’ alon’ fo’ dey come getcha, ya hear?”

Eight year old Charlie simply nodded his head solemnly.

“Da’s a good boy now. Time you got ta movin’ boy. Jacob’s island is where I’m be headed now, iffin I isn’t der in tree o’ fo’ day, I ain’t acomin, so you do best you see fit.”

With those words ringing in his head, Charlie quickly gathered what little he would need. Into a small square of cloth went the biscuits from this morning, along with a few other odd and ends of vittles. Tying the corners of the cloth, he set that to the side of the table.

Next he gathered up two thin blankets, a hank of rope, flint and steel, another shirt, and broad brimmed hat that Gerald had worn for a while. Into his pocket went a Barlow knife, and a loose piece of flint rock; on his belt hung a large hunting knife. The blankets, shirt, and food all went inside an old canvas bag, which Charlie tossed over his shoulder. He looked for a moment at the old shotgun, before deciding it was too much to take. He had no interest in a fight, and had plenty of other food gathering techniques available.

He slipped out the door, and went down to the edge of the Run. He loaded up the little canoe with his bag, when he remembered his bow. He could hear the mob now, it was only around the next bend in the path. Quickly he ran back to the cabin, racing against time and a mob.

He made it to the door, reached in, and was yanked by the wrist into the room. A man, sweaty and drunk stood there, pistol in hand swaying a little.

“I gotcha. Gonna put an end to you Hatchers,” he slurred.

His hammer fell on the cap, but nothing happened. He looked dumbly at the gun, while instinct kicked in for Charlie. He was fortunate that he’d been born sinister, as Gerald would say. The drunk man assumed since he had Charlies right hand, the boy would be clumsy. It was not his first mistake that night, nor would it be his last.

Charlie’s hand flashed to his belt, where the heavy, razor sharp hunting knife hung in its sheath. A quick slash and the drunken man had a wicked cut across his midsection. Howling with pain, he let go of Charlie’s wrist and recocked the pistol. Charlie knocked it aside as the hammer fell, this time igniting the cap and firing the gun. Charlie sank the blade deep into the man’s throat, twisting it to cause more damage.

The man fell to the ground gurgling. Shouts from outside told Charlie that he had waited too long before leaving, prompting him to grab both the bow with its quiver, and the shotgun with its things.

“He’s got a boat loaded!” Shouted a voice from the Run.

Charlie wasted no time thinking about his next move. He dropped the shotguns powder bag, and shot bag. Cocking the hammers, he fired as he moved toward the east side of the trail. Both barrels empty, he tossed the gun into the brush, and took off at a run.

The east side of the trail was the more dangerous. There were sudden water holes large enough for the shack to disappear into, but those weren’t the ones that worried Charlie; the more frequent, smaller ones that were just right for a man to step into and break a leg or ankle were the ones that worried him.

He crouched behind some swamp grass, watching the men mill about the small clearing he had called home. There was much swearing and shouting before the men threw several torches at the shack.

“No!” Charlie shouted involuntarily.

Instantly, the mob turned and rushed heedlessly into the swamp, intent only on the boy. Like a swamp rabbit, Charlie was up and gone instantly, running in zig zags. Shots filled the swamp, none coming close to Charlie, either because the shooters were poor shots anyways, or because they were too drunk to be effective.

Charlie smiled a little as several screams sounded. The smile went away when his foot suddenly stuck in the thick mud. He cursed himself for not thinking about where he was going. He’d wound up at the bank of the Coozey before he realized it.

The Coozey was a slow, sluggish expanse of water, forty feet across, and three to seven feet deep. The running water wasn’t the dangerous place; rather it was the marsh surrounding that was bad. Filled with cotton mouths and deep, sticky mud, it wasn’t a place one went on purpose.

He listened to the mob, maybe a minute behind him, and reconsidered his situation. The only thing he could quickly come up with was to scamper up a nearby cypress.

He settled on a branch ten feet up seconds before the men started to straggle in. Charlie counted as they showed up, he was pretty sure that he counted twenty six, but he could have been wrong. They began to fan out in two’s and three’s.

Soon only two where left by the tree. Charlie considered shooting them with the bow, and had almost decided against it, when one of them walked off with the torch.

The shot was no great feat, maybe twenty feet. It was a shot Charlie had used to take many deer over the years, and it proved again to be successful. The arrow went through the man’s temple, killing him instantly.

Charlie left the body as bait for the man’s friend. It only sort of worked the second time. This time the arrow went through the man’s throat, silencing him, but he was still moving. He turned to run toward the nearest torch when a second and third arrow thudded into his back.

Charlie dropped from the tree, and pulled out his knife. Hovering over the man, Charlie pulled on the man’s hair, raising his head and exposing his throat. A quick slash ended the man.

Charlie removed the two arrows from his back, the one in his throat being broken and useless. Charlie also found the man’s pistol, and a knife, both of which he took. The other dead man had an old flintlock musket, which Charlie left.

Satisfied that he had created a small window for himself, Charlie headed back to the west. Once he was about a hundred yards in, he turned northwest, intent to cut across the trail out of sight of the shack.

As he went along, he realized he was tired. It had been a long day already, and the nights activities compounded his problem. If he could make it to the Run and his canoe, then he would be home free. He could hide forever along the river, and knew all the edible plants and animals.

He returned to the present as he reached sight of the road. To his dismay, the sky was beginning to lighten. With the fading of night, his chances of escaping also faded. He was however hopeful that he coming of day would drive the mob to leave for home, having spent a fruitless night in the swamp.

Hunger gnawed at him, as he hadn’t eaten in a day or two, the biscuits having been uneaten due to an early start on the day before they were ready. Looking about, several options presented themselves: there were still some late berries, a few sprigs of wild onion. Licking his lips he realized that his most immediate problem was in fact, water.

Casting about, he found what he was looking for: a nice large vine. Pulling out his Barlow knife, he laid the vine open, and greedily drank from it. So engrossed was he in satisfying his thirst, that he didn’t notice the footsteps behind him.

“We’, we’, wou’ you look at dat, hmm? Som’body done gone an’ fo’got ta keep a look out fo’ hisself. Mmm, dat’s a real shame der.” Said a voice.

Without even thinking about it, Charlie pulled his pistol and fired, missing both of the men.

“Pu’ dow’ da gun son. I’d hate to spial a good ol’ hangin’ by havin’ ‘a shoo’choo’all.” Said the fat man, who had a long barreled musket pointed at Charlie.

Charlie looked at the two, the fat man was obviously from town, but the other wore the typical clothes of a swamp rat like himself.

“Wha’s yor quarrel wit’ me mista?” Charlie asked, indicating the swamp rat.

“Nuttin’ again’ you youngin’. I’m jus’ tryin’ a feed my fam’ly.” He replied.

“I’m callin’ on my right ta fight this here big man fo’ he takes me in, if you ain’ gonn’ intrafeer.” Charlie replied.

“You ain’ got no worries from me. Fact is, after seein’ what’ you’s done las’ night, I was figurin’ ta head fo’ home. You mo’ man than these here been, to good ta make no money on,” he replied.

“A’righ’ den big man, knives.” Charlie said.

The man looked to be in bad shape, from a night of drunken stumbling in the nicer area of the Run. On the other hand, Charlie was dog tired, hungry, and still thirsty.

The two combatants stepped out into the road, as the mob began to show up. It was an odd assortment that showed up. There appeared to be a total of six dead from the night, and another handful that were limping or being supported. Those that were okay mostly seemed to be swamp people, who had come along likely for the same reason that the other man had said, money was scarce, and they were just trying to help feed families.

Charlie didn’t blame them, nor was he mad, as it was no different than what Gerald had done Charlie’s whole life. Several drew their weapons as they saw Charlie, but were stopped when they were informed of the duel that had been declared.

A ring was formed in the road, and Charlie and the big man began to circle one another. The man was large, mostly fat. He was five foot eight, and an easy two forty. His arms were thick though, and Charlie didn’t underestimate him.

Charlie however was underestimated by the big man. What he saw was a scrawny boy, maybe five feet tall wearing what looked like cast off clothing. What he couldn’t see was the seasoning the boy had from years of living hard and free. His endurance was unseeable, as were the hard, lithe muscles hidden by his oversized shirt.

The big man had borrowed another knife, now holding two. He tried to close the gap on Charlie, who merely rolled away. This greatly amused the swamp folk, who cheered Charlie on.

Angrily the big man charged again, this time stopping just short of Charlie, who went into a crouch. The man lashed out with a foot, and Charlie rolled into the big man’s other leg, knocking him down.

Charlie leapt at the man’s throat, but was thrown like a rag doll. Again the two arose and circled. The big man feinted a charge and when Charlie rolled away, the big man threw one of the knives, hitting Charlie in the shoulder with the butt end. While it didn’t do any permanent damage, Charlie lost his left arm for a moment.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, the big man rushed in, knife flailing before him. While he didn’t land any blows, he caused Charlie to retreat and trip over. In an overly ambitious attempt to end the fight, the big man leapt forward. He was met by a handful of dirt to the eyes. He stumbled backward, momentarily blinded, and Charlie struck.

First Charlie struck the wrist of the knife holding hand, causing the big man to open his hand and drop the knife. Next was a swipe at the man’s throat, instead cutting a wicked gash across the man’s forehead, causing blood to pour over his eyes.

A wild punch sent Charlie flying, but he got back up, and went back. Wary of the flying fists, Charlie rolled behind the man, and hamstrung him, as the man fell, he tilted his head backwards in a scream that never came out. It was precisely what Charlie had hoped would happen, and gave him the opportunity that he sought.

The big man’s body hit the ground with a thud.

“We’, no’ what?” asked Charlie to the men around him.

“I tink we’s all goin’ back home. you’s too good a man to make no money from,” said the swamp folk apparent spokesperson.

“Now hol’ on a minut’! Y’all’s supposed to be heppin’ us take him in fo’ a hangin’,” protested one of the better dressed men.

The swamp men lifted their rifles and shotguns, and the townsmen realized that they were not on the winning end of the fight.

“Young ‘un, as victo’ of the duel, de spoils o’ war is yo’s. I present choo wit ‘is knife, and gun belt, along wit his pistol, a new Colt gun,” said a man, holding out a belt to Charlie.

Charlie took it, pulled the pistol out and inspected it. It was a fine looking gun, shiny and new. He nodded his head, and tossed the belt over his shoulders, as it was far too big for his skinny frame.

He walked over to the brush near the still smoldering shack, and fished his shotgun out from the brush. He walked down to the Run, and saw his little canoe, still as he had left it.

“Iffin y’all ebber needs me, I’ll be ta Jacob’s Island,” Charlie called over his shoulder to the swamp folk.

**************

The old man left out of the bar, wearing ragged old pants, a shirt that was to large, a rough leather vest, and a tattered wide brimmed hat. Behind him was a cursing young fool who sported two new cuts to his cheeks.

“Who is that man?” asked a patron in a broadcloth suit, sipping on the free round that everyone had just received thanks to the old man.

The bartender saw the look in the young patron’s eyes, envy, fear, and greed.

“Look here, stranger. That’s Charlie Hatcher, best you forget whatever you had in mind,” he replied.

The man in the suit and the one who had just been cut both turned slightly paler. Everybody knew you didn’t mess with Charlie Hatcher, the problem was nobody knew what he looked like.

New AR Upper Caliber -Help Me Decide.

Greetings all.

Here before too long I'm going to be going to college out of state. It's a private school, and policy is that all freshmen have to live on campus. They also have a "weapon free campus" policy, which basically means that the most dangerous item you're allowed to have anywhere on school grounds is a Leatherman. Obviously as a preparedness-minded person, this causes issues. I don't like being separated from my gun collection too long.

I have a place to store some things off campus, but due to limited space I can only fit my one hard case of guns.
The case I have is technically for two scoped bolt guns, but it holds my mossberg 12gauge, Beretta 92 and an AR comfortably, with room for one extra upper. Oddly enough, I'm allowed to store ammo in my truck, so that's not an issue.

I'm a pretty avid hunter, and would like to hunt when I get time, but because of this limited space I'd have to leave either my AR or shotgun at home in order to bring a dedicated hunting rifle, and I don't like that idea.

So my best option right now seems to be another upper for my AR. But what caliber should i get. I've basically narrowed it down to four: 6.5Grendel, 6.8SPC, 7.62x39 and 300Whisper.

I'll primarily be hunting prairie dogs the first year, though I may have the chance to hunt deer on a friend's land(he would be more than willing to store it for me - for a portion of the meat). I realize that 5.56 is *technically* adequate for deer hunting, but I would rather use something that is more than just adequate. Plus, I need an excuse to buy AR parts to spite Bloomberg. So here is a list of pros and cons that I've come up with for each caliber.

6.5 Grendel

Pro:
6.5mm bullets are practically magic
Ammo is fairly easy to come by
Has been used successfully by an acquaintance to harvest a deer.

Con:
Barrels seem more expensive than others on the list.
Requires new bolthead and mags

6.8spc

Pro:
Has good energy.
Ammo is available.
Uppers are fairly inexpensive.
Have heard people claim to have killed an elk with a 6.8

Con:
Ammo is more expensive (at least in my area)
Still requires new bolt and mags

7.62x39

Pro:
Ammo is dirt cheap and everywhere.
Has killed more deer than many people realize
Having both a 5.56 and x39 upper for an AR makes ammo compatibility issues between AK and AR owners in a group go away
Really hard to grab the wrong mag

Cons:
I've heard reliability is sub-par, though I've never seen profound evidence.
Mags are harder to come by.
Requires new bolt and mags. Again.

300 Whisper/Blackout

Pro.
Uses same bolt and mags
Subsonic ammo
Ammo is becoming more common/less expensive.

Con:

Not as accurate at long range(400m+), I've heard.
Most I've come across are somewhat finicky/ammo sensitive

Really, I'm kind of liking the 6.5G and 7.62 the most. The 6.5 offers better ballistics, but the 7.62 makes up for it in ammo availability and price.

Help me make up my mind!

AR-15 build for use surviving off the land

DefaultAR-15 build for use surviving off the land

I am interested in building an AR-15 for my journies ahead of me. I will be living in all conditions, using this rifle for protection and for hunting. I will be in snow, rain, summer heat, you name it. So I need a reliable firearm. I was looking at just purchasing a LMT or going with a Colt. But it seems through further research that I can build an even better firearm for my needs for a much cheaper price if I do it myself. I have been hunting and living an outdoors lifestyle since I was a kid. I don’t have knowledge on the AR build, however I am here to learn. I need direction on how to make my build just as reliable as a LMT rifle, while having pin point accuracy. I would love to have the build be no more than $1500. It looks like DD is best for barrels from what I’ve heard. What do you guys suggest?
As well I will be backpacking and traveling on foot with this firearm, so I will most likely go with a shorter barrel and a collapsible stock for easier carrying.

Modernized Angle Head Flashlight At TSC

Found these little guys at our Tractor Supply this morning. It’s a military angle head light with the interchangeable lenses. For 14.99 out the door, I had to grab one. I’ve had a dozen or so of the regular military issues incandescent lights. When I graduated OSUT, guys were just tossing them in the trash. Mainly because they kinda suck. They’re incandescent, runtime sucks, they break pretty easily, and arent that bright. They’re also super heavy for less light than a maglite solitaire.

The new Jobsmart version is a night and day difference. Made out of aluminum, this thing has the heft of a maglite. LED instead of light bulb and easily as bright as a D Cell maglite. Still has the filters. Job smart is tracking 400 lumens. Seems like an exaggeration, but it’s plenty bright. They’re listing an 8hr runtime with 6AAs. Throw is ok. Still has the clips and lanyard ring on the bottom. I’ll post an actual review after I get a chance to use it, but I think it’s going to be pretty popular.

So--exactly--how DID Australia manage to ban guns?

I've read a lot about how Australia almost totally banned firearms in the 1990s. And implemented strict (and getting stricter) regulations on the few who are still allowed to own them.

But what I haven't been able to find out is how--exactly--they managed to pass such restrictive regulations.

And why the Australian people accepted and supported it.

Australia has a pioneer tradition much like that of the U.S. I'm sure they had a strong gun culture going way back. Did these ranchers and outback dwellers support this legislation?

Did the Australians simply passively and obediently hand over their guns? Did the authorities have to go house-to-house doing gun confiscations?

I've read that both the Left AND the Right supported the ban. Which tells me that supporting the Republicans is no guarantee our gun rights will be protected.

I'm assuming Australia has pro-gun organizations similar to our NRA. Did they try and fight this near-total ban?

Since the Florida shooting, I've seen lots of articles calling for an Australian-style ban in this country. I know there are many out there who confidently assert "it won't happen here". Yet, Australia is a culture very close to ours. If they managed to implement a near total ban on guns there, why can't it happen here also?

So--we know Australia nearly totally banned guns. We know how they did it from a legislative perspective, and the reasons that were given for the ban.

However what I have never been able to find out clearly, was HOW such radical legislation was "sold" to the people.

If we can know HOW it was done, it would help those who believe in 2nd Amendment rights to oppose the same thing happening here.

Any Aussies on this board care to comment? Thanks!

Beef Pizzle Sticks

I would like to make my own bully sticks aka pizzle stick for my dog. Does anyone have a source (retail) for beef pizzles? Please don't suggest that I try looking at Asian markets. If you have a link to a source that would be much appreciated.

Since this would be a test run for dehydrating them I figure 20 or thirty pounds would be a good start.

Has anyone dehydrated these themselves for their pet?

Bully sticks are $15 each at the pet store.

Federal Classroom Officers - a brilliant plan

I'd like to see some committee, maybe at the federal or state level, come up with a training course and tests, and of course screening criteria, that civilians could take, probably given by the sheriff's department, and once they pass the tests and are screened they are considered qualified to be armed guards in the schools. The course would have training and tests that are more or less specific to that task.

I like and respect the police, but I do not think there is something magical about being a police officer that makes them the only ones capable of defending schools from a mass killer.

I think there are many men who could do it and have enough spare time to be in the schools as armed guards, and they would probably not even need to be paid, or maybe paid some small amount. I'd think parents and grandparents of the school kids especially would be more than willing to pay for the course and guard the schools. I know I would.

Teachers and other adults working at schools could take the same course and then be qualified to carry. I think it makes sense to have a dedicated guard whose only job is being a guard, but teachers, principals, coaches, and others like them would be very valuable as a backup to the guard (or guards).

This kind of thing is workable and would do much to alleviate this plague of mass school shootings we are experiencing. And for that reason liberal bigots will be strongly against it. But those who care about the safety of our kids should support the idea.

Seems pretty brilliant

Ahh, so you refer to the government in Starship Troopers. Not Revolt in 2100 or any of his other books. As a veteran, I could support that lol

Choosing house location - the fool on the hill or the top dog?

I thought I found a forum here for locations but can't find it now. I am doing some research now on the pro's and con's of having mostly flat land (rolling hills) or land that has some slope to it (hills that elevate more than 50 feet). Here is what I have read so far:

* Putting a house on the top of a hill makes it an easy target for anyone.

* Putting a house on the top of a hill gives you a strategic advantage - you'll see people long before they get near you.

A bit contradictory. Can someone point me to some threads that will discuss this issue - or contribute more to it? I am willing to do more searching and reading but would appreciate a birds eye (pun intended) view before I start.

Prepared for universal background check?

Besides it won't work, the net affect is that it will impact your choices. Advertising on Backpage.com in Arizona is the number one way to actually find new and pre-owned guns for sale here.

If all media is prevented or decides to play it safe and not allow any advertising, then we are back to word-of-mouth, friend of a friend, 3x5 card posted at the shooting range, etc. In places like California, Gun Shows have FFL's that run background checks on buyers for a fee and hold the gun for 10 days (just because).

They also deploy police to the shows as "Sting units" trying to tempt folks to bypass the system and arrest them. I imagine the BATFE would find a new purpose just arresting people at gun shows, etc.

The best part is that the cops are the biggest offenders. In California, my Dad bought and sold guns, cop-to-cop and they never bothered to do transfers at a gun shop. Who wants to pay a fee and have your purchase impounded for 10-15 days. The police and the DA have better things to do than arrest their own.

One Justice system for a few and another for the rest.

Looking for best single stack 9mm for pocket carry.

2. Glock 43 L 6.26, w 1.02, h 4.25
3. Keltec pf9 L 5.85 , w .88, h 4.3
4. Smith & wesson Shield L 6.1, w .95, h 4.6
5. Walter pps m2 le l 6.3, w 1, h 4.4
6. Ruger lc9s pro l 6, w .9, h 4.5
7. Sig 365 l 5.8, w 1, h 4.3

Granted guns like the pps and shield arnt really pocket guns I included them because they are single stack.

Three shortest (l) are kahr, sig, keltec
Three narrowest are keltec, kahr, ruger
Three shortest (h) kahr, glock, keltec/sig

To me objectively the kahr is the smallest most easily concealable 9mm single stack.

Whats everyone carrying?

It has been one heckuva week!

Our week ended up with an emergency call out and a trip/day in the ER, DH is resting comfortably in the hospital tonight.
He passed out this morning and in the process, gashed his forehead, has a shiner and a badly bruised cheek and a fractured thumb. I put the blood pressure cuff on him and when it alerted for irregular heartbeat, I called 911, told them his vitals and status. When the EMTs arrived, they put an EKG on him and said it looked like he was in atrial fibrillation and gave him some meds to get that under control before putting him in the ambulance. At the hospital they did blood tests and a CAT scan today, no elevated enzymes - so assuming no loss of blood to the heart, CAT showed no injuries. Cardiologist is putting him on some a-fib meds, said an episode like this could cause a stroke. More tests and med tweaking tomorrow. Thanking our lucky stars and sending up prayers that this wasn’t worse.

Yesterday a grand nice gave birth to another great grand nephew! The family continues to grow and blend. I hope the world straightens out some (quite a bit!) for the generations coming up.

My son and his family have been fighting the flu that causes issues both ends... had been helping out there through the week.

Thursday my last Aunt passed away after having a massive stroke on Monday. She was 95, married 78 years to her husband who is still living and 103! A good long run and she taught much if the family you can get through most everything if you keep a sense of humor about it. My memories of her are always smiles and many jokes!

I’m the youngest in the generation born to both of my parents families..and from the aunts and uncles. We lost another cousin this week too, he is a Korean War vet and had been an independent proprietor of an auto salvage business in his region. It supported and continues to support several families, and has a few subsidiaries as well. He is from the time and generations of folks who noticed a need and set out to do something about it.

It’s been quite a week of ups and downs, celebrations of life and inconveniences of illness.

After all of that and working “for the man”... I’m a bit tired....

Hoping for this next week to be quiet.....

Reducing Ricochet Danger with BB Guns

At 2017 Pyramid Air Cup, a vendor was giving out samples of lead BBs. Lacking a BB gun of my own, I grabbed a tin just in case. In theory, lead BBs are much softer than steel, reducing the probability of a ricochet off a rock or some other hard surface. Between careful selection of[.....]
