So--exactly--how DID Australia manage to ban guns?

I've read a lot about how Australia almost totally banned firearms in the 1990s. And implemented strict (and getting stricter) regulations on the few who are still allowed to own them.

But what I haven't been able to find out is how--exactly--they managed to pass such restrictive regulations.

And why the Australian people accepted and supported it.

Australia has a pioneer tradition much like that of the U.S. I'm sure they had a strong gun culture going way back. Did these ranchers and outback dwellers support this legislation?

Did the Australians simply passively and obediently hand over their guns? Did the authorities have to go house-to-house doing gun confiscations?

I've read that both the Left AND the Right supported the ban. Which tells me that supporting the Republicans is no guarantee our gun rights will be protected.

I'm assuming Australia has pro-gun organizations similar to our NRA. Did they try and fight this near-total ban?

Since the Florida shooting, I've seen lots of articles calling for an Australian-style ban in this country. I know there are many out there who confidently assert "it won't happen here". Yet, Australia is a culture very close to ours. If they managed to implement a near total ban on guns there, why can't it happen here also?

So--we know Australia nearly totally banned guns. We know how they did it from a legislative perspective, and the reasons that were given for the ban.

However what I have never been able to find out clearly, was HOW such radical legislation was "sold" to the people.

If we can know HOW it was done, it would help those who believe in 2nd Amendment rights to oppose the same thing happening here.

Any Aussies on this board care to comment? Thanks!
