Having never fired a gun? What points you to a shotgun? Is it that shotshells are forgiving on accuracy? That can be true, but even a mild load in a 12ga is quite the thump when you fire it.
Before you decide on what type of gun, I would suggest calling some firing ranges to see if they rent guns. You can rent several types and try them out on their range. It is a bit of a cash outlay, but well worth it. Some do offer training in my area too. Not sure in NJ.
If you do decide a shotgun and you want dead simple, get a break action single shot. One with a bit of lube on the moving parts can sit forever in a dry clean environment and be ready to go. 12ga is the most common largest one. 20ga is the next down, then .410. There are other gauges but they are less common. ( 16, 10, 28, 32) I would avoid them. New single shot 12ga can be had in my area for $100 plus tax and background check. I would avoid the lowest ones though. They can have issues. A used good name brand can be had for less than $150. Obviously pricing is probably more in your area.
You can get a decent 12ga pump for around $200, but these have more parts to break for the 4 round or so capacity. Might not be best for the beginner that wants to store it a long time.
