Interesting discussion with pastor...your thoughts

A few weeks ago we had a guest pastor speak. I've heard him speak at other locations and he's a very good friend to my pastor.

Any way, he gave a talk about Race-Relations in America...

He made lots of comments I didn't agree with and it bothered me. I would be interested in hearing other Christians and your thoughts. After his Wednesday night talk several of us went out to dinner and we had a discussion face/face.

He feels white people have got to show empathy to black people and white Christians should go to black leaders to express our sorrow, our empathy over slavery, Jim Crow, how black youth have been treated by police and most of all fully acknowledge to black people how wrong we were. He feels this is the path to healing our racial divide that is killing this nation. He said lots more but in a nut shell that was it.

I very VERY politely asked to speak to him in private. So we met at our house. His wife came and as well as our pastor (my best friend for 35 years).

The (3) of us finally went out to our sun room and had our discussion. I made the following points to him and asked for his view point/opinions.

Logically:

1st I said I don't see how people with white skin are in some way wrong or guilty for what other people who happen to share the same skin shade. If a black man robbed a bank and killed everyone, I wouldn't expect the black race to come and show empathy just because they share the same skin color.

Biblically speaking:

I read parts of Ezekiel 18 to him. One of the rare times God himself speaks GOD--->“What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel:The parents eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’?

(3) “As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel. 4 For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child—both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will die.

(19) The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.

Apologizing:

I very politely asked how can people who just so happen have white skin be asked to apologize for something they had nothing to do with?

I then asked which 'white people" the ones who can trace their family tree's to slave or Jim Crow states? What a white skinned family living in Wisconsin who gave sons to free slaves and fight against Jim Crow laws.

What about "white people" who's family came to America from Ireland in 1900 who had nothing to do with any of this...just being white?

What about bi-racial children but look white, what do they say? Why decides who is pure enough white to show the sorrow and empathy?

Going to black leaders and showing empathy:

I asked which black leaders? The ones that are calling for the death of police officers or the ones calling for racial unity and forgiveness. Or like the black writer Walter Williams saying liberals are stirring racial divides and don't be fooled. Blacks need capitalism and to be fully intergrated into the main stream and start fully experiencing prosperity and self-determination.

His Response:

He said those are all good points but we have a greater responsibility to sow peace. That many times we have to look beyond what we see/feel and see how other see/feel even if it means taking the high road.

I disagreed but was polite....

your thoughts, am I wrong or not seeing something? Be honest, bold with me if you have to, I can take it. OM
