Improvised intrusion alarm. Stick one end into the slot at the top of a closed door. Place an empty can on it. Door opens, can falls and makes a noise. May require some tweaking to hold the can stable. Mother's crystal candy dishes make more noise, but you'll have to vacuum up the broken glass. (This still works even if the door is several inches ajar, but it takes a little more bending.)
