What changed?

As 6.8SPC's thread points out, once upon a not-so-distant-time, many of us took our guns to school:

It seems to me that a few things gradually changed right around the same era that guns vanished from schools:

1. Family values deteriorated; more divorces and single-parent homes became the new normal. As a result, millions of latch-key kids are on their own until Mom (or Dad) comes home from work. Kids are almost raising themselves, and much of their time is spent in consuming large doses of #2 on this list. A single parent's time is widely divided in caring for the household and not enough time is spent on old-fashioned parenting. At a young age, kids are plopped in front of the TV and spend more time with the media industry than with their parents.

2. The media industry has been promoting a new normal: insanely violent movies, music, and games. Impressionable young minds are getting the persistent message that these things are acceptable, regardless of what adults tell them. Kids are surrounded by a type of gross violence that is unique. They're not watching anything like The Three Stooges or Wiley E. Coyote anymore.

3. The "participation trophies and ribbons" mentality fostered by the school system has created an unrealistic view in young people that the world "owes" them something for nothing. "Helicopter" parents are more common and contribute to the coddled mentality.

4. Prescription drugs rewiring young minds in efforts to fix "new" alphabet disorders such as ADD, ADHD. Then there's the parade of antidepressants that doctors prescribe like candy:

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
Serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)
Serotonin modulators and stimulators (SMS)
Serotonin antagonists and reuptake inhibitors (SARIs)
Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (NRIs)
Norepinephrine–dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRIs)
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs)
Tetracyclic antidepressants (TeCAs)
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)

Back in the old days, most of us learned that there ain't no easy button and learned coping skills without pills to "help" us. The pharmaceutical industry changed all that. (True, there are legitimate cases where antidepressants are truly needed, but not to the extent doctors are prescribing them these days.) The medical industry is beginning to see that these drugs are causing more harm than good, yet continue to prescribe them for children and young adults.

We have an entire generation of kids that are artificially "wired" via prescription drugs, who are programmed to view the gross violence that is glamorized in music, movies, and video games as perfectly acceptable and normal. Even "kiddie cartoons" are too realistically violent these days. You may be able to add a touch of the "Lord of the Flies" mentality into the mix when you combine these factors with the after-school freedom that is prevalent in single-parent households.

Considering these things, I am not at all surprised that school shootings are becoming more common.

Your turn:

What do you think has contributed to the deterioration of the good in our society, to the point that it is prevalent in our young people?
