Looking for private land to camp on Jan 10-13 in Northern MN

Two of us were looking to go camp in the Chippewa National Forest up in the Deer River area for three nights, kind of a cold-weather gear test, and a monkey wrench has been thrown into our plans.

I had contacted the Deer River Ranger District a few weeks back to discuss options and find out the rules and who we should notify when we arrived and such, and they told me to call back as it got closer to the day, because there were specific people I could talk to who would be helpful and informative.

I called today and got their recorded message that they have been furloughed for the time being due to a "lapse in federal funding" -- the government shutdown has closed them down.

So, my friend and I are all geared up and close to being ready to go, have taken time off work, and now aren't sure if we have a place we can legally camp. So I thought I'd throw it out there that I'm looking for a spot on private land if anyone is open to that -- please PM me if you'd be willing to let us camp on your land and I'll touch base with you to work out details. Thanks!

Old 4H Improvised munitions project?

Default Old 4H Improvised munitions project?

In another forum someone referenced an old Army manual from 1969 on improvised munitions. It caused me to remember a 4H project from the early 70's regarding improvised munitions for civil defense, etc. I recall reading about it in the list of available projects and constantly asking my leader about it; was always told it was not available. Kind of curious about the old Army manual too... any one know a source for these. Would seriously doubt they contain any information not readily available on the web already or easily figured out by anyone with HS or college chemistry and physics but would still make interesting reading.

Is An Outboard Motor Vulnerable To EMP?

We don’t even know if cars and personal electronics are really vulnerable to emp. With no access to independent testing it’s pretty much a matter of faith either way. Emp report says no. Random book authors and YouTube personalities say yes.

That motor at minimum is going to have a coil and points. If it’s newer it likely has electronic ignition. If you think stuff like that is vulnerable, then yes, your motor is.

Filling generator?

Make a fuel transfer pump like this. Has a switch, a fuse and filter. Plugs into a cigarette lighter or clamps to the 12 V battery. 10' of cord, 20' of delivery, 5' of suction hose. $50 Works for harvesting fuel too.

You can buy and install/replace vents in the plastic cans unless you live in a nanny state.

I posted the parts list in a previous post.

Handful of shootings in your neighbourhood, do you upgrade your security level?

So you'd just stop your plans in life because some people got shot in your neighbourhood, seriously? Like months of time investment, thousands of dollars and your future plans on a 10+ year educational plan because people have guns and the odd person is being killed every month?

My takeaway so far, is that maybe the things that sounded like gunfire I've been hearing every now and then, really is gunfire.

Again this is a big city, and moving isn't one of the options that is useful.

Any other suggestions?

Like for instance I already carry atleast one Israeli bandages, but perhaps I should upgrade to two. Another thing I am considering is wearing my level IIIA body armour. You know cellphone for calling 911.

What else is prudent in an area where shootings are plausible? is it worth actually carrying my firstaid kit on me including the modeling clay, swab inserts and crazyglue etc...??? what else would be useful for a shooting kit? Should I add a tourniquette system? etc..??
Not sure what else might be prudent to carry

My first impression is that there are some drug issues in this area... due to a large number of homeless people and noticing really tweaked and angry people occasionally. There are tons of police I ran into 5 cruisers and 3 ambulances just jogging around the neighbourhood tonight. So I am not really worried about response times. They even showed up when my foreign roommate (one flatmate/housemate) called 911 when his girlfriend lost her phone -- police entered on a 911 call for a lost cellphone... would have been great if he told me as I would have got more clothes on than my underwear.
None the less... police times aren't an issue.

Again hopefully would keep this generic but what steps can improve survivability in an urban gun threat situation?

I'm the type of person who gives money occasionally to panhandlers, but I am also the type that tells people to get the hell off the road if they are panhandling on roadways etc... so another thing, what are the odds than homeless looking panhandlers are armed???? Is it likely street panhandlers have firearms????
