Albany County Deputies arrest Vermont handgun owners if they bring a handgun to check-in at Albany Airport. FOPA does not cover driving to an airport and getting on an airplane in New York, as FOPA is not recognized in NY.
In-state and licensed (NYC/NYS) should be OK as far as I know. I have traveled in and out of Albany no problem with my (NYS licensed) handgun several times.
However - a NYC Premises Only license does not allow for out-of-state travel, which may get the firearm owner in trouble with the NYC Police HQ Licensing Section
Best advice for gun owners: stay out of NYC and New Jersey in its entirety when traveling with long guns. Add the entire state of New York to that list for out of state handguns.
If your airplane is diverted to any of the previous mentioned locations DO NOT take physical possession of the firearm.
Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, studying the law at my age is nothing more than a hobby.
EDIT: FOPA is NOT recognized by the New York State Police (for handguns) AFAIK even in an automobile.
OP please do not refer to the airport police in New York City as Gestapo. It is very inappropriate. They are more like Waffen SS - they wear really sharp uniforms.
