Doomsday - Grid Down.. opinions and idea's needed

So I'm all set up... have most of my supplies ready.. and a fine job I think I've done of it.

But there's one last thing.. I want to have options for generating my own electricity for a long term grid-down scenario. And I want to generate a ton of it...

I already have a large grid-tied solar array that powers my whole home and reduces my utility bill to zero.. in fact, the power company owes me energy... I would expect an EMP would fry the entire thing so I'm stock piling spare parts.. Specifically, I have extra solar panels in a Faraday cage and now I'm considering the purchase of a large, 8,000 watt 120/240 split phase inverter.. Why so big you might ask? Because I want refrigeration as well as the ability to run a mig welder if I need. I'm also considering the fact that being able to charge batteries for other people would be great barter material..

So that said, I'm looking at an Outback Radian inverter that I can store in my Faraday cage along with the multimeters, battery chargers, ham radio, pH testers, CB, and a host of other electronics. Yes, its a big freaking cage (box), multi layered with 18ga steel and aluminum) with specialize conductive copper door seals..

The thing is, big inverters are useless without some big battery banks.. and that got me thinking..

In the event of a long term Grid Down situation, would I be correct to believe that 12 volt car batteries would be everywhere just waiting for someone to rip them out of abandon vehicles, boats, lawnmowers, motor cycles, and anything else that won't work anymore due to the EMP or a shortage of fuel?

I've tried thinking this through and I can't imagine these batteries being used by anyone.. Most people are too stupid to know what to do with them anyhow and the ones with some working knowledge probably won't have any way to charge them up....

Am I missing something?

And for those "in the know", I realize a car battery doesn't hold a candle to a quality deep cycle battery designed for the purpose, but we're talking quantity here over quality.. its my opinion that 12 volt car batteries will be available everywhere for the taking.. Am I wrong?

Let's block ads! (Why?)
