My main argument for finding tomorrows solutions in the past, is the empirical side. They were practices used for centuries with only minimal change that worked and made it possible to survive through some pretty rough times. Also, they do not rely on modern energy or contraptions that may fail. During SHTF, a smoker oven, clay baking oven or axe, can be fixed with the right knowledge. A fridge, automobile or chainsaw is a different thing. Special parts, only manufactured in the non SHTF society may be required, as will modern energy sources and special know how. For a while, these modern items will make life a lot simpler, but in the long run, they will fail. When there is no electricity or generator gas to run the fridge and freezer, we will have to know other methods of food preservation, or risk starvation. When the chainsaw no longer works, we will have to know how to use and make/repair an axe and manual saw, etc.
Here is a series of films looking into the way of life and methods from different eras of the past. Now, of course not everything will be equally useful or applicable, but I'm pretty sure they will be inspiring and create some thoughts and ideas.
If you have come over similar films/programs, please share in this thread.
