What is North Korea's true objective?

I don't think they have any intention, at least in the short term, of hitting the US - even Guam. I think what they will do is to, when they can, detonate a nuke over the Pacific somewhere as proof that they can do it. That will be followed by an open threat and an invasion of South Korea. The war will last a couple of hours really, with a little fighting for as long as a few days.

What North Korea wants more than anything else is to unify the Korean Peninsula. That's not to say that they won't get bigger ideas after taking the South but their #1 goal is unification. What they need to do is to let us know that they can and will nuke us for any serious defense of the South and then they will take it.

China won't interfere to stop them because South Korea is one of the top competitors to China and China would love to see South Korea look like North Korea.

North Korea will likely set its sights on Japan next but China won't let that happen. The Chinese and Japan have a long history of aggression against one-another and China will want Japan for itself when the time comes.

The world is going to change within the next few years. Is it next year? Maybe; maybe not. Maybe it's closer to 10 years, but it's coming.
