I have access to a Browning BAR in 30-06 that I thought might be a decent rifle to have around if the need arises. It's an 80's or 90's model with a Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x50 glass. I've killed a few deer with it before and it does it's work out to 200 yards or so, never shot it much farther than that. I have a Remington 700 in 7mm that's my designated long range rifle, but it's slow to load and shoot. I have a scoped AR that can reach out, but there's something to be said about the authority of 5 rounds of 30-06 as fast as I can squeeze the trigger.
From what I understand, the BAR hunting rifle is extremely reliable and low maintenance, being that it's piston operated (someone correct me if I'm wrong). An AR-10 is certainly on my shopping list, but it might be years before that happens. So, think this rifle is worth getting my hands on again?
P.S. Wolf now makes a 30-06 load with a 140gr soft point bullet (still steel case) for about 60 cents a pop. I've read a few reviews that they perform just fine in semiautomatic rifles.

Browning BAR for possible defensive rifle? Thoughts?
