If defending, it's not about being on the high ground, especially given intel tools used today (magnifications, targeting computers, advanced optics, etc).. you should study some standard defensive tactics for emplacements such as reverse slope defenses, counterslope targeting, corralling, etc.
It's all very terrain specific but one major advantage of a reverse slope and counterslope attack combination is the ability to bring units into your small arms fire range and limit the use of long range and indirect fire against you.
