What's the best water filter out there?

I'm looking at the Katadyn Hiker Pro and Vario which filters chemicals and bacteria but doesn't filter viruses and is rated at 3 to 500 gallons of water. at about 60 to 100 dollars.

And the MSR GUARDIAN that can filter over 2000 gallon. But is like 300 dollars.

What should I be more worried about living in a large southern city with a large river with hydro dam near by. viruses or chemicals?

Is there something that filters all three bad crap? Chems, viruses and bacteria with that can filter up to at least a few thousand gallons of water? I know it will be expensive but I'm thinking of spending around 500 dollars if need be. maybe 600 dollars or more if it's really really good.
