Reading up on .458 SOCOM

A totally foreign caliber to me until recently, I have been reading and researching the practicality of the .458 SOCOM round. I find it interesting that it is completely compatible with a standard AR lower and magazine, though significantly pricey at ~ $2/round (factory ammo), and ~75c/round for brass. Aside from being a stout hunting round for hogs, etc., does the .458 SOCOM have any real world purpose for non-military/SF civilians in a defensive capacity? Seems rather expensive for an anti-personnel round, when .308 might suffice, but a semi-auto round on par with 45-70 is intriguing.

Would it be outlandish to have a designated AR15 as the go-to rifle, then pack a .458 SOCOM upper and a couple mags of ammo for emergencies?

Sorry for my ignorance on this topic ... not my area of expertise.
