DIY water filter (like those carbon inline fridge filters)

I am almost done making one. The goal is to save $ by buying the charcoal in bulk and replacing it in a reusable brass pipe.

The fittings are already assembled. What remains is the internal parts. I'll use this as the central media:

Is this safe? I always thought those plastic inline refrigerator filters were basically this.
