Spraypainting gun before burying/cache/oiling it?

I've heard that when burying a weapon cache underground it is VERY important to soak it with LOTS of gun oil,
my question is, if I also want to camo paint it, can I paint it before oiling/burying or will that cause problems:
1) Maybe the spray paint will block the oil from doing its job
2) Maybe the oil will completely ruin the paint job (since it will might be buried for long time)

i.e maybe the only solution is to bury it with a spraycan, however I would much rather have painted it before burying it
